ADHD and Math: Why Keeping Track Can Be Harder Than Understanding

If you have ADHD, the hardest part of a math problem often isn't understanding it — it's keeping track of it. Research points at inattention and working memory rather than a lack of mathematical ability, which changes what actually helps.

You know how to solve this. Really. You understand the rule, you followed the example in class, and you even solved something similar yesterday.

But now you’re halfway through the problem and something goes wrong. You lose a minus sign. You copy the wrong number. You forget what you were trying to do.

A few lines later, the answer is wrong. And you’re looking at your work thinking:

“How did I mess this up again?”

If you have ADHD, math can be frustrating in a very particular way. Sometimes, understanding the math isn’t the hardest part. Keeping track of it is.

That distinction matters. Because struggling with math when you have ADHD doesn’t necessarily mean you’re bad at math — sometimes math simply asks your attention and working memory to manage too many things at once.

Does ADHD make math harder?

For many students, it can. But ADHD does not mean you can’t understand math.

A systematic review of research on ADHD and mathematical ability, covering 30 cross-sectional and four longitudinal studies, found a consistent relationship between ADHD symptoms and math difficulties. Importantly, the connection was particularly marked for inattention rather than for hyperactivity or impulsivity.

That makes sense when you look at what solving math actually requires. You have to keep track of what you’re solving, what you just did, where this number came from, which rule you’re using, and what you need to do next — all at the same time. For someone whose attention moves easily, that can become a lot to manage.

And this isn’t only an issue for children. A longitudinal study of 3,688 university students found that greater inattention symptoms were associated with lower final GPAs and a greater likelihood of not completing the degree. So a student taking calculus or statistics in college may understand the concept perfectly well and still struggle to keep all the pieces together while solving the problem.

Sometimes the problem isn’t “I don’t understand this.” It’s:

“I lost track of what I was doing.”

Why can multi-step math be hard with ADHD?

Math puts a lot of pressure on working memory — the mental space you use to hold information while you’re doing something with it. Take this equation:

3(x − 4) + 7 = 19

You start: 3x − 12 + 7 = 19

Then: 3x − 5 = 19

Everything is correct so far. Now you want to add 5 to both sides. You know exactly what to do. But while writing the next line, you write:

3x = 14

instead of:

3x = 24

That’s it. One small mistake.

You didn’t misunderstand algebra. You knew the rule. You knew the next step. One piece of information simply got lost while you were doing it — and now, unless you notice it, every step after that will be wrong.

A study of 186 clinically evaluated children with and without ADHD found that working memory was strongly related to mathematical performance — the working- and short-term-memory components together explained 56% of the variance in the children’s math achievement scores. That’s one reason long math problems can become difficult.

As the solution gets longer, there is more to keep organized. What did I do two lines ago? Did I already subtract that? Where did this number come from? Was that sign positive or negative?

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing the math.

It’s keeping the whole chain together.

Why can word problems be especially difficult?

Word problems add another job before you even start calculating: you have to decide what matters. Imagine this problem:

Maya arrived at the bookstore at 4:30 p.m. She bought 3 notebooks for $4 each and paid with a $20 bill. The store closes at 7 p.m. How much change did she receive?

To solve it, you need 3 notebooks, $4 each, and $20 paid. You don’t need 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.

The tricky part is that all of these numbers appear in the problem. Before you can do the math, your attention has to separate the useful information from everything else. For someone who already finds it difficult to control where their attention goes, those extra details create more competition.

And that leads to an important point:

Sometimes the hardest part of a math problem isn’t the math. It’s knowing where to look.

What if the important part was easier to see?

Telling someone with ADHD to “just focus” isn’t always very useful. Focus on what? Which sentence? Which number? Which part of the equation? Which previous step?

One study tested something surprisingly simple. Researchers highlighted the relevant words and units in math word problems for students at risk for ADHD, and under the study conditions, highlighting the relevant information improved problem-solving performance and reduced off-task behavior.

It was a small study, so highlighting shouldn’t be treated as a magic solution for ADHD. But the idea behind it is powerful:

Instead of asking the student to focus harder, make it easier to see what deserves their attention.

A long word problem can become Look here. A complicated equation can become This is the part you’re working on now. A solution with ten previous lines can become This earlier step is the one you need. None of that makes the math easier — it removes some of the unnecessary work around doing the math.

One small mistake shouldn’t ruin the whole problem

Let’s return to 3(x − 4) + 7 = 19. You solve:

3x − 12 + 7 = 19

3x − 5 = 19

So far, everything is right. Then:

3x = 14

One small arithmetic mistake. You continue: x = 14/3. You reach the bottom of the page. And your homework system says:

❌ Incorrect

Now what?

You know something went wrong. But where? Was the distribution wrong? Did you combine the terms incorrectly? Did you use the wrong operation? Did you divide incorrectly?

You have to search backward through the entire solution. And if keeping track of a long chain is already difficult for you, that search itself can become frustrating.

One tiny mistake shouldn’t erase everything you did right.

Catch the mistake while it’s still small

Now imagine the same problem differently. You write:

3x = 14

And right there, before you build more work on top of it, you get: “Check what happens when you add 5 to both sides.”

You look again. 19 + 5 = 24. You fix it:

3x = 24

Then: x = 8

You still solved the problem. Nobody replaced your thinking. You simply caught the mistake while it was still small, which is very different from reaching the end and seeing only Wrong.

It lets you understand exactly where the solution changed. Then you fix it. And keep going.

ADHD doesn’t mean you’re bad at math

This is worth saying clearly. ADHD and dyscalculia are not the same thing, and having ADHD does not automatically mean you have difficulty understanding numbers or mathematical concepts.

You may understand the concept perfectly well and struggle somewhere else: keeping track of several steps, finding the relevant information, remembering where a number came from, returning your attention to the right place, or noticing a small mistake before continuing.

So if you have ADHD and math feels difficult, it can be useful to ask a more specific question. Instead of “Why don’t I understand math?”, try:

“Where am I actually losing track?”

Those aren’t always the same problem. And they don’t need the same solution.

How can students with ADHD make math easier to manage?

A useful goal is to reduce how much you have to manage at once. Focus on one step instead of the entire page. Make important information easy to see. Keep previous steps visible instead of trying to remember everything. Break long problems into smaller decisions. Catch mistakes before building more work on top of them.

And when you get stuck, get help with the specific thing you’re stuck on instead of immediately replacing your entire solution with someone else’s.

That last part matters. You can take a photo of almost any math problem and ask an AI tool to solve it, and the problem becomes easier immediately. But now the AI is keeping track of the problem. The AI is choosing the next step. The AI is doing the mathematical thinking — which is why solving math problems yourself matters more than watching a finished solution appear. If your goal is to learn math, the better tool is one that reduces the unnecessary difficulty without taking the problem away from you.

What if your math tool worked with your attention?

Most advice for students with ADHD contains some version of: Focus. Slow down. Check your work. Those aren’t bad suggestions, but they put almost all the responsibility on you to fight your attention.

A math tool can do something different. It can change the environment around the problem. Instead of “Focus on the problem,” it can say “Focus on this part.” Instead of “Check your work,” it can say “Look at what changed between these two steps.” Instead of “You got the problem wrong,” it can say “Everything was working until here.”

That’s a very different kind of help. It doesn’t ask you to magically pay more attention.

It makes it clearer where your attention should go.

Did you really not understand the concept? Or did you lose track of a step? Did you not know the formula? Or did you miss the important sentence? Did you not know how to solve the equation? Or did one small arithmetic mistake send everything after it in the wrong direction?

Those aren’t always the same problem. Sometimes you don’t need another 20-minute explanation. Sometimes you need the right thing to stay in front of you: one step, one number, one part of the problem.

One thing to focus on right now.
